Croxteth Country Park
The raid on the longhouse
major new National Show near Liverpool
11/12th Jun 2005, Croxteth Country Park, Liverpool
Dateline, 950AD
The park is situated just outside Liverpool , in gorgeous grounds with a large mansion and a farm containing animals from our period. Although this year it is only a one day show we have been given permission to camp Saturday night on the main lawn in front of the house, ready for the show.. The site is well sheltered and backed by mature trees and woodlands and has ponds and lakes all around it.
There will be an arena between two distinct camps, one Saxon and one Viking, we need as many structures as possible for this to work! The LHE will be in the glade nearby, in the old longhouse there, all crafts are very welcome. The client is also arranging for some local market traders to be located just around the corner.
Liverpool is to be the European Capitol Of Culture in 2008, and we are hoping to have further events with this and other clients in this area, so your support would be appreciated!
The main arena will contain the armies, and the ensuing fracas over the farm, which is in the glade next door. Historically this place was very fiercely contested at that time being owned by a Viking called Crox, hence the name. Please let Paddy know numbers of warriors, and bring your bow as there will be an opportunity to shoot. An archery event is now being planned!
We have access to the site from Friday evening although there is no public commitment on Saturday, but training will be available. If you wish to arrive on Saturday, there will be a wedding on at the House, so please try to arrive before lunch or after 4.00pm. There will be the usual Wiral Welcome Wagon. Help will be provided unpacking and erecting tents etc, and an evening meal will be supplied. Notice of your attendance would also be of help to those arranging catering, and the details of the site, so please call Linda or Sonnie on 0151 637 1645 (email: sonnie_sa@yahoo.com). Fires in off the ground boxes as usual if you really feel the need, please use charcoal only, due to fire hazard.
We have the arena from 12pm till 5pm: Events will include:
Are good, easy access, parking, modern camping, toilets and water. There are local shops - but remember food can be provided if you wish! Sunday breakfast between 8-00am and 9-30 am, lunch at 1-00 to 1-30pm.
The Saexering will act as a static display as part of the LHE.
A very popular feature we added to the LHE last year was Pagan Boat Burials. We'll need some grave goods, most of which will be on site anyway, but just to make certain, could you bring Hnafatfll sets and especially boards (not printed cloths) and other similar things. Lewis chessmen would not be out of place, not to go in the grave as they are too late, but as an item for display etc.
We'll be looking for a volunteer corpse(s), too.
These facilities will be available 24 hours a day from both LHE and modern camp sites from Friday noon.
We can have TWO fires only at the modern site. Please comply with this request and both fire sites must have the turf lifted before building the fires. Wood for modern camp site fires can be obtained from the LHE supply but there should be no supply problem considering the arboreal setting.
Access for vehicles could not be easier, but LHE vehicles will not be able to park very close to the site during the day due to the idyllic setting.
Croxteth Park is not far from the centre of Liverpool and has all the expect facilities within walking distance.
Croxteth Park is in the outskirts of Liverpool. It is quite a quiet area, but valuables should be locked in a car or kept with you.
From the western end of the M62, turn right onto the A5058. Turn right into Muirhead Avenue , following the road straight ahead until you reach a big roundabout. Access to the House and grounds is at this roundabout, look out for the “Regia” signs.
The location of the event can be found on multimap here.
There is the usual WIC allowance and hardship money available upon completion of the form and proof of membership as usual. No fuel expenses.
